DVD Night : Paul
While you may not have heard much about it when it was in the cinema, the cast of Paul alone is enough of a reason to watch. The classic combo of Brit funny men Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, partnered with some of the biggest names in US comedy, (Jason Bateman, Bill Hader and Bridesmaids’ Kristen Wiig) just makes Seth Rogen’s portrayal of on-the-run alien ‘Paul’ even funnier.
Written by Pegg and Frost, this is somewhat different to their past exploits into film (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) as other than the two of them, it is a fairly ‘American’ film. The film documents two British geeks’ trip across the US to explore the most famous UFO hotspots, and while driving across Area 51 they come across ‘Paul’, a 4-foot tall alien on the run from the government. They soon discover that he’s been here for the past 60 years, and after a brief fall out with the military, is now attempting to get back home. Their job is to help him, but find that it’s not as easy as they’d hoped, with the government following their every move.
The fact that it’s a comedy weeds this film out from the other similar UFO-themed sci-fi films, and its original story makes for a really interesting watch. Some brilliant one-liners, combined with surprisingly good CGI and great acting makes it a film that anyone, no matter what film genre preference they have, can thoroughly enjoy.
